A tour of the City of London looking at the multiple legacies of the transatlantic enslavement and London’s involvement in it.
On this thought-provoking tour you will be invited to consider the multiple legacies of the transatlantic enslavement of Africans and London’s involvement in it.
We’ll look at the origins of the English and British trade in enslaved Africans, some of the institutions and individuals involved, African resistance to enslavement, the abolition campaigns, how it was enslavers, not those who had been enslaved, that were compensated when slavery was abolished and how that compensation money was used.
Advice to participants:
– Wear ultra-comfortable shoes.
– Check weather forecasts and make sure you have warm and waterproof clothes if necessary. Being cold on a walking tour can spoil the entire experience.
– Do not hesitate to bring a little snack with you (nuts or biscuits) and a flask of your favourite drink.
