Monday 16th November 2026 at 10:15am (meet) – 10:30am (start)

Meeting Point: Inside the Sainsbury Wing of the National Gallery. Once you have gone through security and the entrance door, Muriel Carré will be waiting in the main hall, immediately right of the doors, between the doors and the big stairs! You can’t miss her!

This National Gallery tour with expert guide Muriel Carré will transport us to Tuscany. Under the evocative pietra serena vaults of the Sainsbury Wing, we will learn a lesson or two in the subtle art of soft power!

From the early days of Cosimo the Elder, the Medicis became experts at subverting art to their advantage, at controlling historical narratives and also at commissioning some of the foremost artists of their time for the enjoyment of all… and for the benefits of their own clan. Soft power on a grand and sumptuous scale!

Together we will be looking at some of the world’s most beautiful and famous renaissance paintings and discover how art was channelled to serve the interests of the de facto ruling family, the Medicis! The power of art and the art of power!!

Advice to participants:

– Wear ultra-comfortable shoes.

– Check weather forecasts and make sure you have warm and waterproof clothes if necessary. Being cold on a walking tour can spoil the entire experience.

– Do not hesitate to bring a little snack with you (nuts or biscuits) and a flask of your favourite drink.
