A place filled with history, an imposing 18th-century palatial house, a world-class art collection: Somerset House has it all!
From Somerset Place, one of Tudor London’s greatest power houses to Denmark House, the official residence of Stuart queen consorts, Somerset House as it stands today was reconstructed in the 18th century as London’s first public building for administrative purposes; here, in a palatial building of late neoclassical style, some of England’s earliest art societies occupied the lavish interiors today used by the Courtauld Gallery. We will spend some time outside the building to discover its history before heading to the Courtauld gallery to discover its main highlights.
Advice to participants:
– Wear ultra-comfortable shoes.
– Check weather forecasts and make sure you have warm and waterproof clothes if necessary. Being cold on a walking tour can spoil the entire experience.
– Do not hesitate to bring a little snack with you (nuts or biscuits) and a flask of your favourite drink.
